3 Things Keeping You From Reaching Your Wellness Goals:
“Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard the following…”
“It’s all about your diet and exercise.” While this is true and it will help you reach your health goals, this is not where the road to reaching your health and wellness goals starts.
And if you are not currently eating right or exercising, that is not what’s keeping you from reaching your goals.
“What Mark?!” Did you actually just say that? Why Yes, I did!
Well then, “Where does it start?”; you’re probably asking…
Well, It starts with…. wait for it, wait for it,….
IT STARTS WITH YOU & YOUR MINDSET.
And here are 3 things that are keeping you from reaching your health and wellness goals.
1. FOCUS: You see, your “Focus” is where your mind directs it’s attention or effort. And as you have heard me say before, we will focus on , what ever it is we think about most often.
so your lack of focus on what you want to accomplish keeps you from reaching your potential with respect to your health and wellness or other aspects of your life.
Put another way, we have a tendency to focus on what we don’t want rather than what we want.
Here’s an example: “I am out of shape and overweight. I should really start a diet and exercise more”
You see, in this example, your mind is focusing on being out of shape and over weight so your mind stays stuck in a cycle of being out of shape and overweight.
Instead we need to change our focus to a lifestyle and habits of health and wellness.
The improved thought process:
“I live a lifestyle of improved health and wellness by eating right and exercising”
This way your mind’s focus changes to one of health and wellness rather than: “I’m out of shape and overweight”.
2. Belief: Your belief in yourself that you can reach your health and wellness goals.
You see, this goes hand in hand with your focus. Let’s use the same example.
If you always see yourself as “Out of shape and overweight” then you don’t have the belief that you can be successful in any program that you start.
So it goes like this…You start a diet and exercise program but because your focus was on being overweight and out of shape, you don’t believe that you can succeed, so in a week or two of marginal success, you give up.
So you can see how FOCUS and BELIEF go hand in hand.
By enhancing what you focus on, you can “Flip the switch” to believe and “Know” that you can succeed in reaching your goals.
Now, in that last sentence, I said, reaching your goals; which brings me to my last thing on the the list.
3. GOALS: If you do not set specific goals, you will not reach them. Sounds silly, doesn’t it. But many people do not set any specific goals.
And with no specific goals, all you have is mights, maybes, somedays, and should haves.
And the thing with mights, maybes, somedays and shoulds….is they usually stay that way and you never get anywhere.
“You WILL NOT reach 100% of the Goals that you DO NOT set for yourself”
That being said, now is the time that you can focus on setting more specific goals for yourself and to FOCUS on what you want to accomplish and how you want to live.
If You are talking about your health & wellness, then you can set specific goals for how your health WILL BE with respect to your body and mind.
Then you can also have the goal that you will commit to focus on the lifestyle habit changes it will take to realize your goals.
And did you hear what I said there.
Lifestyle habit changes. The only way to see lasting changes is to create new positive habits that create lasting results.
So what I want you to do now, is take the 3 things that may be keeping you from reaching your wellness goals; a lack of Focus, lack of belief and lack of specific goals and turn them around into the 3 reasons you will Reach your health and wellness goals.

Use Your G.P.S. To Reach Your Health & Wellness Goals:
As a physical therapist and someone who suffered with chronic pain for years, I can tell you that the journey towards wellness can sometimes be challenging and it doesn’t always seem like you’re getting anywhere and sometimes it can seem like you’re even going backwards.
But your ability to move forward is directly linked to your ability to choose to move forward.
I’m here today to talk to you about setting your direction or your path towards wellness.
You see, very often when we’re stuck in a cycle of pain, stress or anxiety, it is easy to complain about the situation and your inability to do anything about it but in the same respect, you may not be doing anything about it or you are doing the same things you have always done and not getting any results.
Remember it was Einstein that said,: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
It may seem simple but you need only to “CHOOSE” to move down the path towards wellness and you will start to reach your goals.
It’s like setting a destination in your minds GPS system. If you set your goals for your health and wellness and then create a plan to reach those goals, you will begin on the NEW journey that will get you results.
Now, normally GPS stands for Global positioning system. It is where we set a destination for where we want to go. we plug in the address of where we want our journey to arrive at and the GPS system plots out a course. Now there may be traffic or accidents or challenges but we we know if we stay on course we will eventually reach our destination.
Now, MY GPS stands for:
Goals, Plans & Strategies.
Your goals are the specific goals you will set for yourself with respect to your life, your health & wellness, your family or anything.
Your plans will be figuring out how you will accomplish your goals and
your strategies will be how you will exactly carry out the plans that will enable you to reach your goals.
That means specifics as to when, what and how you will do what you need to do to reach your goals.
And just like the Global positioning system, if we set our goals and create a plan to reach them, there may be challenges along the way, detours and obstacles but you will eventually reach your goals if you stay on the path ou have set in your minds GPS.
You need only to choose your path.

OMG, I just can’t seem to get going today… I can’t get anything done.
And I don’t know why! Uggh!
Have you ever felt that way. I have had that feeling more times than I’d like to admit.
My friend and I were having a conversation just the other day. We were talking about being in the right frame of mind to progress ourselves towards our goals.
To be able to properly focus in order to get the things done consistently and move us towards to where we want to go; whether it’s for your health and wellness, personal growth, family, business or relationships.
We talked about being “In The Zone”. Now that’s a term most of us have heard. It’s about being in that “sweet spot” that has our brain thinking inline with what our goals are and getting a lot done; almost automatically.
I will get to how I get focused in just a minute.
Most times, when I am having a tough day, it’s because I either have too much on my plate and I don’t know where to start or that I don’t have much on my plate at all. But, very often, with these busy times, not having enough to do is rare.
When we get the feeling that we don’t know where to start, it can literally “paralyze” us into not doing anything at all. This can have us “stall out” and prevent us from productive activity for hours, days, weeks and, yes, even years.
In the worst case you can get into a negative cycle that perpetuates itself that prevents you from moving forward, at all. It stops you from progressing, until you can break the cycle.
The negative cycle usually starts when we lose site of what our goals are or we start a negative cycle of thoughts. Thoughts like:
“I can’t do anything”
“I don’t know what to do”
“I’m always in pain”
“Nobody believes in me”
“I couldn’t possibly do that..”
“What if I try and I fail”
Sounds tough and depressing doesn’t it. It is an easy trap to fall into to and a challenging cycle to break.
Well, I’ve got good news and good news. That’s right, I wanted to say that.
The good news is that it’s possible to break the cycle, get focused and get “In The Zone”.
The other good news is that YOU can do it.
No one can break the cycle but YOU. You are the one that has to DECIDE to break the negative cycle.
Here’s how I get “Into The Zone” and get myself into a positive cycle.
Remember, I talked about losing site of what your goals are. When was the last time you thought about your goals? Do you have any specific goals? Remember, dreams and wishes don’t count as goals.
When was the last time you wrote your specific goals down? Hmmm.
I know…I am very goal oriented and I forget sometimes. I have to re-visit my goals, write them down and re-shape them to allow for where I am in my life, right now.
So, if you haven’t written any goals recently, or ever, write down 3 specific goals, on paper, that you will reach by then end of the month. Now, I could go into great depth and probably fill a full weekends course on writing goals, but for now, here’s a couple of hints.
Write your goals down on paper or on the computer.
Be as specific as possible and write them as if they’ve already happened.
Ex: I walk/run 3miles on (write in the date).
This gets your brain working on how to achieve that goals. Our brains need a deadline to work on solutions.
Do yourself a favor. Write down your goals right now (not if your driving), or after you’ve finished this blog.
The other way to get yourself in a positive cycle and help you get “into the zone” is getting yourself focusing with a positive mindset that is goal oriented.

It will help you stay focused with a positive, action oriented mindset.
Focusing on thoughts, such as : I will, I can, Decide, Action, Goals, Positive Energy, Solutions.
As I talked about previously, when you are in a negative cycle your mind focuses on the negative aspects of your life.
You can control this and, with practice, you can keep your mind in a positive cycle where positive outcomes abound.
We become what we think about most often. Make what you think about most often positive, and you will see your life enhanced for the better.
A positive, focused mindset that is aligned with specific goals is a powerful force that can bring positive results in your life.

How To Take Control, Get Started and Reach Your Goals
I’d be willing to bet that…
…you have at least one big stress or more than one stress,in your life right now.
In just a few moments, I’ll let you know how I deal with those stresses,
take control and turn those "stressers" into a reachable goals.
Your stress, like many of us, may be coming from a number of factors…
- a feeling of: lack of control
- Stress about the current state that you’re in
- general stress and/or anxiety on multiple levels
- your current state of health or lack there of (Chronic pain, over weight, multiple injuries, etc).
- Or a general sense of not knowing what to doing about your current situation
Now, often, we deal with these stresses by…
1. Doing Nothing, or…
2. Doing Everything
What do I mean by that?
With Doing Nothing: high levels of stress can be present when we are unhappy with the apparent state that we feel we are in.
This leads to a sense of overwhelm and lack of control. When we feel a lack of control we get “paralyzed” and we do nothing or have a lack of action. We continue with the same habits and patterns that perpetuate our current state because of not knowing what to do.
And in the same thought process, we will still wonder why things are not changing.
Like Einstein said: “The definition of insanity is doing the the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”
This can lead to the “Why me?” syndrome where you feel like you have no control and that everything is “happening” TO you.
With Doing Everything: I also see far too often that… we will try “a little bit” of everything and anything to help our current stress or situation only to give up quickly either because it feels like it isn’t making a difference or that we had temporary success and then return to our old habits.
This is the diet syndrome. You know what I mean, don’t you. We’ve all lost 10 or even 20lbs on a diet at some time in our lives, right?
We use a diet, whatever that diet might be, and we lose weight. Why? Because we were ready to lose weight. But…because it’s a diet, what happens? We stopped the diet and we return to our old, eating habits and return to our previous level. Bummer.
The reason why the diet doesn’t work is that it is temporary. When we go off the diet, we return to our previous level.
The only way to make lasting changes to your current situation, whatever it may be, is to change your thoughts and actions. If you improve your current thoughts and actions, and you do it repeatedly creating new habits, you will get positive, lasting results.
I told you that I would get to the solution.
The solution starts with what I call, The “I” factor.
The “I” Factor is your ability to enhance your “state”, thereby, allowing you to enhance your thoughts and actions. And by improving your thoughts and actions and continuing this pattern, you develop positive habits that lead to positive results.
Here are some Key components of the “I” Factor:
It is the awareness of you current state, including where you’re at and where you want to go or what goals you want to achieve. Now, if you reading this post or listening to it, you have already initiated “The Awareness” phase.
It goes much deeper than that but for this post, the “I” Factor and “awareness” allows you to move forward from where you are now and move forward towards where you want to be with respect to you life.
Now, with Awareness, comes Control.
Often we can’t moved forward from where we are because we “feel” that we don’t have control.
Now is the time to take control. You may not believe it, but you are in control of your thoughts and actions and THAT is the key.
Once you realize that you are in control, you can set specific goals for what you want to achieve and move forward with a plan of action.
And planning out how you will achieve your goals (whatever goals they are), and taking action is a key step in achieving them.
In review, use The “I” Factor to recognize and become “aware” of your current state. Know that YOU are in control of your situation and in control of your thoughts and actions. Enhance your thoughts and actions and enhance your life. Make a plan and take action.
